| David and
June Otis work in both stoneware clay and porcelain to create production
and one-of-a-kind objects designed for use in the kitchen and as
decorative accents for the home. Their work is wood fired in a
down-draft kiln and the surfaces show the natural ash deposits along
with shino and celadon glazes. Production items are also fired in
an electric kiln.
The pottery of David and June Otis can be seen
in collections throughout two continents. Before moving
to northern Michigan in 1988, they lived in Germany for 20
years and have assimilated the thoughts, ideas, and influences from
many cultures and artistic directions into their pottery. While
David's work is primarily functional, June has developed a series of
porcelain and clay objects- kimonos, animals,
angels, and abstractions- that are mounted
and framed. Her Japanese heritage has influenced the shapes,
textures and designs of her small sculptures. David has a BA in
art from the University of Kentucky and an MA in painting from the
University of California Berkeley. June has a BA in Art from
Fresno State and an MA in painting from University of California
Berkeley. They now have made a satisfying
transition from the medium of painting to that of clay.
The Pottery Studio and Gallery are open to the
public year round. Hours may vary but generally are from 9 AM - 6
PM. Visitors may observe pottery being crafted, tiles being
pressed and, if lucky, see a wood firing in progress. You are cordially
invited to our studio. For a printable map and directions CLICK HERE

| Because of our interest in
Music, the past twelve years we have hosted a weekend of Art and Chamber
Music at the pottery. These pleasurable evenings feature newly
fired work from David and June and the work of an invited
two-dimensional artist. Within the ambiance of new and unusual
work, musician friends perform beautiful chamber music in an intimate
setting, often to an overflow crowd. Frances Shelby, our flutist
friend from Wichita, Kansas, has been responsible for a wonderful
program and is assisted by many friends who play professionally.
This year's "Art and Chamber Music" Open House will be held
July 4 - 6 and is open to the public. For more information call
