ARTIST INFORMATION
Living and working in rural Antrim County, Michigan, Ron and Cynthia Tschudy have been creating pottery for twenty years. In l976 they moved to northern Michigan after she had completed her MFA in ceramics at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Both began teaching in the public schools, Cynthia in Elk Rapids, Ron in Bellaire; after twenty-three years in elementary art, Cynthia now teaches high school art -- Ron devotes full time to the pottery.

In 1980 they started creating pottery as a business, Ron slab-building and Cynthia painting and drawing on the pieces with airbrushed underglazes and underglaze pencils. The work continues to be slab-built and the imagery is based on the natural world. For most pieces Ron first presses soft clay into one or more of many press molds Cynthia`s carved, and then assembles the piece; others he builds "smooth" (with no pressed imagery on them) and then she carves and/or paints on them using underglazes or glazes. All pieces then have one or more glazes sprayed on them, with liquid latex sometimes used to mask one glaze from another. The Tschudys make soap dishes, toothbrush holders, mugs, napkin and mail holders, photo frames, pitchers and vases of various sizes, clocks, mirrors and so forth in four basic colors --blue, navy, a green/teal combination and a celadon/rose combination. An array of this variety will be shown on at least one of the slides in the near future.

Both Ron and Cynthia feel incredibly fortunate to work at home in this beautiful countryside setting making decorative and functional porcelain things people appreciate and even cherish.
